Tally or Excel: What Do Employers Actually Ask For?
We spoke to a dozen hiring managers in Hisar about what they test in an accounts interview. The answers surprised our students.
The short answer: both, but in different proportions than students expect. Employers assume Tally knowledge. What separates candidates is Excel comfort — VLOOKUP, pivot tables and clean data entry habits.
In practical interviews, the most common test is a messy sales register that needs to be cleaned and summarised in under twenty minutes. Candidates who know keyboard shortcuts finish; those who reach for the mouse do not.
